New Zealand allergy specialists are downplaying international claims of mass hysteria over nut allergies.

Professor Nicolas Christakis, of the Harvard Medical School in the United States, said measures to control children's exposure to nuts were spiralling out of control.

In a British Medical Journal article published this week, he cited examples of 10-year-olds being evacuated from a school bus because a peanut was rolling around the vehicle's floor, and schools declaring themselves nut-free by banning peanut butter and other products containing traces of nuts.
