I was sitting in the club lounge with my friend the English professor when a player stalked in from the noon duplicate and complained that her partner had been negligent as declarer.

"Love that word 'negligent,'" the prof mused. "Conjures up an image of a woman absentmindedly answering the doorbell in her nightgown."

"What happened?" I asked.

"We got to four hearts. East took the top clubs and led a third club (not best). West ruffed with the seven of trumps, and my partner overruffed with dummy's queen ... and led dummy's last trump!"
