I was sitting in the club lounge with my friend the English
professor when a player stalked in from the noon duplicate and
complained that her partner had been negligent as declarer.
"Love that word 'negligent,'" the prof mused. "Conjures up an
image of a woman absentmindedly answering the doorbell in her
nightgown."
"What happened?" I asked.
"We got to four hearts. East took the top clubs and led a third
club (not best). West ruffed with the seven of trumps, and my
partner overruffed with dummy's queen ... and led dummy's last
trump!"
FOURTH CLUB
"So East rose with the ace and led a fourth club," I observed,
"and West scored her eight of trumps."
"Exactly," said North. She stalked out as ...
