Allegheny County's medical examiner wants to know how chemicals
leaked from a barrel set for removal from the County Office
Building, forcing officials to send home more than 500 workers
Monday.
"Those are not chemicals that should erode through a 55-gallon
drum. And yet they apparently did," said Dr. Karl Williams, whose
office operates its crime lab in the Downtown building's basement.
"So that raises the question, the people who came in and packed
them, they're allowed to combine some chemicals ... but they
shouldn't get to a point where they cause any problems with the
barrel. That's one of the angles on our investigation."
