Here, along endless avenues of well-swept floor boards, and past
more stacks of cotton reels, balls of wool, shoe laces and cards of
knicker elastic than even the most demanding of grown ups could have
needed in a thousand lifetimes, stood wonderland. A glass and
polished red enamel island of toys.
A whole library of Ladybird Books - Beaky the Greedy Duck, Smoke
and Fluff, Piggly Plays Truant, yes, I have them still - and stacks
and stacks of cheaper stuff. Card games, that stuff you blew bubbles
with and tacky plastic tops made in China.
And the favourites - small green painted crossbows with bolts
with rubber suckers, and pop guns which broke in the middle just
like the real thing and ...
