In 2007, Atlas Van Lines began keeping track of how many pages its employees were printing.

Through regular e-mails, the company would inform the staff of the numbers. At the same time it would give advice on how to cut back; e-mails, for instance, could be saved on a computer rather than printed and placed in a file.

"It was more for awareness," said Barbara Cox, Atlas director of marketing communications. "Let's show you how much you are printing each month."

The campaign resulted in Atlas' cutting its consumption of paper by 1.1 million pages in 2007 and by 750,000 pages up to June of this year. It also led to the company's winning a John Biasini Environmental Excellence Award for its ...
