Q Can you tell me what the law says about using Global Positioning Systems in California? Can one attach it to the windshield or not?

A As of Jan. 1, yes. A new law will allow drivers to place a portable GPS device in a 7-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield on the passenger side or in a 5-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side. These are the only two locations on a windshield where a GPS device can be mounted. The GPS device also must be placed outside of an area where an air bag can be deployed.
