Judy Kern leads her friend through a tiny vestibule into the
chapel of St. Patrick's Church in the Strip District, pointing out
the religious statues inside.
Candles and the early-afternoon sunlight streaming through
stained-glass windows illuminate a replica of Rome's Holy Stairs.
The sanctuary smells like melting wax.
"Every time I come to the Strip, I bring someone with me to see
(St. Patrick's)," said Kern, of Oakmont. "I just think it's so
unique and so old. It's beautiful."
Understated from the outside, St. Patrick's easily could be lost
amid the Strip District's clutter, but the church's interior draws
thousands of pilgrims and tourists each year for its unique
