When the Daily Mail's Neediest Cases Appeal was begun during the Christmas season in 1961, it set out on a mission different from other holiday charities.

Plenty of charities then - and now - existed to provide holiday turkeys or hams and toys and trinkets to families in need.

But how about the needs that exist year-round, the ones keeping families from being healthy, or warm, or properly clothed, or even able to serve nutritious meals?

The Neediest Cases Appeal sought to improve lives of poor West Virginians by providing services and necessities that often slip between the cracks when it comes to charitable giving or social services.
