Article: 'Recycle your Christmas trees'

THEY only spend about a month in your house and can cost up to [pounds]50, but most Christmas trees will be in landfill sites by the end of next month.

But one conservation group is encouraging people to think twice about how they dispose of their trees.

Last year, Teesdale Conservation Volunteers (TCV), based in Startforth, near Barnard Castle, recycled 3,000 Christmas trees.

The trees were shredded and rotted to make compost and mulch for gardens and allotments.

TCV said it was one of the most environmentally friendly ways to get rid of the trees.

Spokesman Martin Bacon said: "Trees are quite bulky, so by shredding them, it reduces the amount of space they take up.
