The decision taken in 2005 by the GAA to open Croke Park
temporarily for international rugby and soccer matches was a
landmark in the history of sport on this island. In that year the
organisation decided by 227 votes to 97 to have Rule 42 modified
temporarily because Lansdowne Road was being redeveloped.
One of the most noteworthy results of this visionary development
was the stunning win by the Irish Rugby team over a brave but
outclassed England side which was trounced at the headquarters of
the GAA. The sharing of Croke Park helped to relegate further to the
shadows of history the dark overtones of previous Anglo-Irish
