Article: Humane Society files suit over name Smaller shelter confuses donors, agency fears

They aren't exactly fighting like cats and dogs, but the state's oldest animal welfare group has gotten into a spat with an upstart group in Milwaukee, claiming the new organization stole its name and is undermining its efforts to raise money.

The Wisconsin Humane Society has filed a lawsuit demanding that Humane Milwaukee Inc. find another name.

The Wisconsin Humane Society, 4500 W. Wisconsin Ave., has been in business for 130 years. It merged with the Ozaukee Humane Society in 2004.

Companion Animal Resource and Adoption Center started in October 2005, but changed its name to Humane Milwaukee Inc. in September. It is located on the second floor of Southridge Mall in Greendale.
