W HEN Princess Margaret dropped by at Rist's Wires and Cables Limited, in Newcastle-under-Lyme, in December, 1958, the company had already been in existence for some 56 years.

The royal visit merely boosted its already-high profile.

However, the firm's expansion into Newcastle did not occur until the middle of the 20th century.

Its history dates back to 1902, when a firm called Prested Miners' Gas Indicating Electric Lamps Limited was formed in North London.

The business made miners' lamps which incorporated an indicating device that would detect the presence of methane.
