This year make it your New Year's resolution to pile on the pounds, rather than shed them. We are talking pounds sterling, of course, rather than lightening the load on bathroom scales.

Many families will already be feeling the pinch because of the credit crisis and impending recession. The bad news is that the situation looks set to worsen, at least for the first half of 2009, with job losses rising, house prices falling and returns on savings and investments dwindling. Many in the City expect a rate cut from the Bank of England next week.
