I Reply to Shaun Kesterton's letter (Echo, Nov 28) about herbal
supplements and depression.
First, I would state St John's Wort should not be used in
conjunction with prescribed anti-depressants because that would be
what makes it dangerous. But taken on its own it has helped me and I
had no trouble whatsoever.
A large body of research shows that St John's Wort is a safe and
effective treatment for mild to moderate depression.
In a new study, 251 people suffering from acute depression were
randomly assigned to receive 300mg of a St John's Wort extract three
times a day or 20mg of a prescriptive drug once a day for six weeks.
