Hey, let's spend the weekend in Alaska!
Sounds crazy? Not really. If you've ever blitzed into New York
for a long weekend from the Bay Area, you should know this: Flying
to Anchorage takes the same amount of time. And the windy canyons of
Manhattan don't compare to the jagged, snow-capped ranges which line
the fjords a mere half-hour to the south of the Alaskan state
capital.
In mid-October, I blasted up last-minute from San Jose on Alaska
Air ($544; you'll do better with some planning) and stayed in basic
digs at the Clarion Suites ($119 per night) in downtown Anchorage.
My wife, Sara, was already there on business. We rented a car and --
newcomers to the state, both of us -- were blown ...
