Patients, visitors and staff should be allowed to use their
mobile phones more widely in hospitals, according to guidelines
issued by the Department of Health.
The updated guidance, released yesterday, says that NHS trusts
should consider giving patients, staff and visitors the widest
possible use of mobile phones, where it does not interfere with the
privacy of others or cause a nuisance.
However, mobile phone use will still be restricted in areas where
there is intensive care equipment, because they could cause electro-
magnetic interference.
The guidance adds that areas where phones should not be used
should be clearly indicated so patients and staff are fully aware.
