A study conducted by the Arizona Department of Environmental
Quality (ADEQ) has revealed a correlation between asthma attacks in
children and increased air pollution in the Valley.
The study was funded by the federal Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) and tracked Phoenix-area hospital and emergency room
reports of asthma attacks in children between the ages of 5-18 from
January 2005 until September 2006. The approximately 5,000 asthma
attacks were then compared to air-quality data from the region in
which they occurred.
According to the report released by ADEQ, the study found that
asthma attacks increased 14 percent on days with elevated levels of
particulate matter of less than 10 ...
