The Liberal Democrats emerged as the big winners in the city
council by-election in Drypool.
Lib Dem candidate Linda Chambers won the seat and increased the
ruling party's overall majority at the Guildhall.
The Lib Dems now have 34 seats on the council to Labour's 19.
Following a 26.7 per cent turnout, Mrs Chambers took the seat
previously held by Conservative Andy Sloan, who resigned before
Christmas because of work commitments.
He originally won the seat for the Lib Dems in 2006, but quit
the party last year after an acrimonious falling-out with
colleagues.
Mrs Chambers, who works as a nurse at Hull Royal Infirmary, now
has two reasons to celebrate - today is her 57th birthday.
