What was it about John Wayne's persona that made him so admired
by the masses? He wasn't the greatest actor in Hollywood, by any
means. Yet, he quietly and quickly became the unofficial symbol of a
true American male to most of us.
We all laughed and agreed wholeheartedly when it was with his
likeness that the "Why, in America, do I have to press 'one' for
English?" cartoon made its rounds.
Marion Robert Morrison was born May 26, 1907, in a small, four-
room white house in Winterset, Iowa. Reportedly, he weighed a
whopping 13 pounds at birth.
His father, Clyde Morrison, was a pharmacist whom John described
as "the kindest, most patient man I ever knew."
