People who have dealt with downsizing offered a number of tips on how to deal with making the move to a smaller home:

- Be aggressive when sorting through your belongings.

"We're not overly sentimental people. We had to be fairly ruthless," said Sharon DePue.

Folks who are more sentimental may have to rent storage space or make sure their children can hang on to belongings they want to keep but no longer have room to store.

- But don't be too aggressive. Lauri Ward, author of "Downsizing Your Home with Style" (Collins Living, $17.95), said that people should think about how their furniture can be put to a new use in a smaller residence.
