Something uplifting happened to Nathan Dolbeare when he traveled from the plains of his native Illinois to the American West as a boy.

"The mountains captured my attention," he said.

A passion for peaks still grips him at age 38. He recently spent 6 weeks on a quest to climb Cho Oyu, the sixth highest mountain in the world. Located on the border of China and Tibet, the summit is 27,765 feet, or 8,201 meters.

"There's only 14 mountains in the world over 8,000 meters, and you can see three or four of them from the top (of Cho Oyu)," Dolbeare said.

He and his wife, Kris, moved from the Twin Cities five years ago when his bosses let him "telecommute" to the job he held in information ...
