A Landmark in Hull's nautical and drinking history, now at the
end of its life, is the famous Blue Heaven pub or, to give it its
proper name, The Anchor in Southcoates Lane.
Our picture was taken in its concert room in about 1963 and comes
to us from Irene Hornby, of Northroad Villas, Bewholme, near
Driffield.
The photograph shows her husband Gary Hornby (without a tie) and
his brother Len, who is holding a cigarette over the head of Ray
Grout. They were regular customers, says Irene.
Other people in the picture include Pat Grannon (fourth from
left, standing), Mick Cook, Spike Joyce, Cass and John Collo
(Collinson), all of them dockers apart from Gary. In those days, a
