Article: Record results, but the East Riding still slipped

Despite achieving the best set of GCSE results in its history, the East Riding has lost ground in the national performance table.

The improved performance of local schools is not reflected by a higher position in the national league table of 149 authorities. The East Riding has slipped from 32nd to 39th place because other authorities improved more.

But the margins between similarly ranked authorities are small, so education officials insist people should not read too much into the annual fluctuations in the table.

Councillor Penny Peacock, East Riding portfolio holder for schools, said: "We always take the league tables with a pinch of salt because year-on-year our results are improving.
