Article: Eponymous company patriarch Berkman reaches 100

About 85 years ago, a young kid named Louis Berkman dropped out of school so he could drive his father's horse-drawn wagon and peddle junk in his home town of Steubenville, Ohio.

On Thursday, Berkman, who went from street peddler to head one of Pittsburgh's oldest and most successful companies, Ampco-Pittsburgh Corp., turned 100 years old.

Like he has for decades, Berkman yesterday was at his desk at his office in the Steubenville headquarters of the Louis Berkman Co. Privately held, the Berkman Co. holds stakes in a number of companies, including nearly 16 percent of Ampco-Pittsburgh, along with Swenson Spreader Co., Follansbee Steel and snowplow maker Meyer Products Co.
