Stephanie Weiler introduced her son Friday by saying, "This is
soon-to-be James."
She and her husband, Ben, then walked into a courtroom at
Milwaukee's Children's Court Center and legally adopted the smiley
baby.
It was a joyous ceremony of family and love that contrasts
sharply with James' heartbreaking start in life. His 18-year-old
birth mother invoked Wisconsin's safe haven law and walked away from
her newborn after bringing him into the world on July 1 at a
Milwaukee hospital.
Doctors gave him a temporary name of Taylor to go with the
standard last name used in these circumstances, Spfn-Doe, which
stands for safe place for newborns.
