James (Jim) William Burks Jr. passed away Wednesday, January 14,
2009. Jim was born in Roanoke, Va., February 4, 1938, to the late
James W. Burks, Sr. and the late Missie W. Burks, who both preceded
him in death. Jim was a 1955 graduate of Lucy Addison High School.
He graduated Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in 1959. He
continued his education at UVA, Roanoke College, Northwestern
University and Lynchburg College. Jim served in the U.S. Army and
was honorably discharged. He was the first African American in
Norfolk and Western Railroads management trainee program, retiring
from Norfolk Southern Corp in 1998. Jim served on a host of public
