As disgusted as people are that Treasury Secretary-designate Tim
Geithner failed to pay his taxes, some are sympathetic, saying his
tax problems underscore the need for a simplified federal tax code.
If mistakes can happen to Geithner, a tax expert who worked in
the Treasury Department under three presidents, they can happen to
anybody, they say.
Geithner insists his failure to pay payroll taxes on income he
received from the International Monetary Fund from 2001 to 2004 was
an honest mistake that was "careless and avoidable but
unintentional."
Geithner says he did his own tax returns in 2001 and 2002, using
a tax-preparation computer program. The next two years, he hired an
