As disgusted as people are that Treasury Secretary-designate Tim Geithner failed to pay his taxes, some are sympathetic, saying his tax problems underscore the need for a simplified federal tax code.

If mistakes can happen to Geithner, a tax expert who worked in the Treasury Department under three presidents, they can happen to anybody, they say.
