Article: It's a quieter, less-explosive Chinese New Year celebration

Growing up in capitalist Hong Kong, I always associated Chinese New Year with money. Aunts, uncles, grandparents and the lady who sold newspapers down the street would cram my pockets with red envelopes - little packets filled with crisp bills that would give me paper cuts.

As I got older, I grew to appreciate the deeper meaning of a holiday defined by family reunions and ancient customs.

Starting today, Inland Valley families who trace their roots to China, Taiwan or Hong Kong will usher in the Year of the Ox. Others in the Korean and Vietnamese communities will celebrate the Lunar New Year, too.
