In a quiet neighborhood in Arnold, a house was transformed. Like many homes, this one saw a family grow up and the children move on. But unlike some homes that outlive their usefulness, this one had an advantage - two empty nesters committed to staying put.

"It will be 23 years in February," Susan Lieb said, detailing how long she and her husband, Jay, have been in the house.

As for the changes, their goal was relatively simple.

"We didn't need more space, we needed better space," Ms. Lieb explained.
