Life took Sei Mandai out of Japan, but it could not take the Japanese lady out of Sei Mandai.

Like the tea ceremonies she elegantly demonstrated, she created islands of calm in her new American life as the wife of Eugene Pramenko.

"She picked out a lucky day," said her husband, referring to the Japanese tradition of picking an auspicious day for a wedding. "And it must have been, because we were married for 48 years."

Sei Mandai Pramenko died of natural causes Dec. 18, the couple's 48th anniversary. She was 77.

The youngest of seven children, she was born in Kobe, Japan. Her father was an engineer who worked for a private company providing electrical service.
