A survey to find England's best county has ranked East Yorkshire bottom of the list.

The result has sparked fury from civic and tourism leaders in the region.

The county has come 40th, down from seventh when the survey was last carried out in 2003 by Country Life magazine.

The region was among the worst performers in most of the 19 categories measured, including landscape, heritage, property prices, flood risk, health, council performance, crime statistics, Who's Who entries and even sunshine.

Devon was named the best county.

Visit Hull and East Yorkshire chief executive Janet Reuben said the findings ignore the rich landscapes, culture and vibrancy of the region.
