Rival Cypriot leaders take up thorny issue of property: UN envoy

NICOSIA, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of Cyprus' two rival communities on Wednesday started their negotiations on property disputes, one of the thorny issues caused by decades-long partition of the Mediterranean island.

"The two sides formally presented the principles which will guide the negotiations on the property issue," said Tay-Brook Zerihoun, the UN Secretary-General's special representative in Cyprus.

Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will meet again next Wednesday on the complex issue, the UN envoy added.
