The newly-established Avon air ambulance is swapping the
helicopter it shares with the police for a "workhorse of the sky"
in order to provide cover seven days a week.
The Great Western Air Ambulance, which covers Bristol, North
Somerset, Gloucestershire and parts of Wiltshire, flies from
Tuesday until Saturday - when it is handed to the police for two
days.
The arrangement, which costs pounds1.3 million, means anyone
needing help on a Sunday or Monday must rely on aid from other
counties.
Now bosses have come up with a way of not only cutting the cost,
but extending the cover.
They will swap their contracted Eurocopter EC135 for a smaller
and more versatile Bolkow 105DBS helicopter, ...
