Calls to give free school meals to all primary schoolchildren
were rejected by members of Plymouth City Council.
Pauline Purnell, Labour councillor for Honicknowle, called on the
council to reverse a decision not to take up a Government offer to
be part of a trial of giving free meals to all primary children.
The Government would have contributed up to pounds3 million,
depending on how many children took up the free meals, and the
council would have had to match the Government money.
"It would mean the food would be of a high standard and sourced
locally,"
Mrs Purnell told a meeting of the full city council yesterday.
