Jack Covert remembers when the revelation hit, circa 1997.

He sent out a catalog for the business books he had been selling with steady success for about 10 years. And nothing much happened.

"I literally accused the post office of not sending our catalogs out," he remembers. "Within six weeks a third of our business went away."
