Article: Signing day full of hope and hoopla

As I stood, shoulder to shoulder, amid the Timpview student body last Wednesday, I had to smile.

Signing day has come a long way, baby.

When I first moved to the sports department in 2000, it was a rare thing to send a photographer or reporter to watch a high school senior sign scholarship paperwork. If you think about it, watching someone sign legal papers isn't very exciting. It's not unusual anymore either.

But still, there we writers were, middle-aged and mashed together with the students hoping to catch a glimpse of their classmates signing, smiling, offering a thumbs up.

Signing day has become to college football what the draft is to professional football. Where will the best players ...
