North Staffs: The University Hospital Of North Staffordshire has cut by a third the time it takes to test blood samples from patients being treated in its accident unit.

A re-design of staffing rotas in the trust's department of blood sciences has led to results being back with doctors in an average of 39 minutes compared to the previous 58 minutes.

The new working practices give high priority to A&E samples which are now marked in red transport bags to make them easily recognisable. A laboratory assistant has also been given the sole responsibility of making sure specimens from the casualty department always come first.
