Hundreds of stowaways have been arrested hiding in the back of
lorries across the Westcountry in a major crackdown on illegal
immigration.
The number picked up in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset every month
has trebled since 2005.
Last night the UK Border Agency said hi-tech equipment including
carbon dioxide and heartbeat detectors had made it easier to find
people using increasingly complex hiding places to enter the
Westcountry illegally.
According to figures seen by the Western Morning News, in the
last five months of 2005, an average of just nine stowaways were
arrested by police and handed over to the agency's offices in
Plymouth, Dorset and St Ives.
