DAYTON -- Dayton's status as the smallest city in the United
States with three professional dance companies took another hit last
week when the Dayton Ballet announced emergency measures to ensure
its survival as one of the country's oldest ballet troupes.
Earlier this year, Rhythm in Shoes announced that the 2009-10
season will be its last.
Ballet companies, which tend to have far bigger payrolls and
production expenses than other dance organizations, are struggling
from California to New York City. If recent developments, such as
Dayton Ballet's decision to slash expenses and furlough staff
following the season's final performance on March 22 seem abrupt,
