Madison's north side is bleeding millions in potential consumer spending, and the city wants to plug the hole with a multiyear redevelopment plan.

"There are a number of opportune sites for redevelopment in the next 10 years," said Jule Stroick, a neighborhood planner in the Madison Department of Planning & Community & Economic Development. "But the north side has a lot of competition from the east side, Sun Prairie, Waunakee and DeForest.

"There's a study that says 50 percent of consumer dollars leaked out of the area in the last few years," Stroick said.
