Hull Royal Infirmary's accident and emergency department is to undergo major alterations to ensure it can cope with increasing demands.

The department at the Anlaby Road site in west Hull was built in 1967, expecting to handle 55,000 patients a year.

It has been extended twice, once in 1992 to create a paediatric A&E area and in 1995 to extend the waiting room. However, the department now sees 120,000 patients every year.

At least pounds500,000 is to be spent on increasing the size of A&E.

Although specific plans have not yet been confirmed, Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust is considering a number of options.
