SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- By now you've probably heard that Brian
Wilson was Barry Zito's housemate in the Hollywood hills this
winter, motivating him through psycho workouts, spotting him in the
weight room and, yes, actually playing long toss across a canyon.
But the Giants' tattooed reliever supported Zito in another way,
too. When Zito's mother, Roberta, passed away in November, Wilson
proved to be an ideal companion.
"I knew because I went through it," said Wilson, who was 17 when
he lost his father to cancer. "A million people were coming up
trying to make me feel better, and I just wanted to be by myself. So
I told him, 'We all have our own way of going through pain. You'll
