Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein came up with a great idea when he signed center fielder Coco Crisp in 2006, and then Jacoby Ellsbury had to go and screw it all up.

Crisp had all the makings of a terrific outfielder who could plug a gap for years to come, but then he got hurt in his first season and never recovered sufficiently in his second season. Ellsbury, called up to play 33 games in 2007, stepped in and, for every sensational defensive play Crisp made that year, Ellsbury came up with another.
