East Riding Council is set to spend around pounds100m over the next three years in a bid to bolster the local economy.

The unprecedented move aims to create and secure hundreds of jobs in the area as the recession bites.

Among the numerous initiatives will be the first council house building programme in the East Riding since the authority was created nearly 13 years ago.

Up to 350 new council homes are being earmarked for Beverley, Bridlington and Goole.

There are also plans to spend pounds16m on a multi-purpose centre to replace the council's Leisure World facility in Bridlington.

Another pounds19m will be ploughed into new road improvement schemes.
