Article: Talks under way to slash San Leandro city, school district budgets

SAN LEANDRO -- Reduced police services, along with library closures and recreation rollbacks, may be among the most obvious losses the community could face as the City Council begins trying to eliminate an upcoming budget deficit of $11.4 million.

And, the city's financial problems could mean an even bigger fiscal headache for the San Leandro school district, which in the next couple of weeks must cut an estimated $4 million from its 2009- 10 budget.

The council's finance committee learned Tuesday afternoon that downsizing city operations would mean fewer services for elementary, middle and high school students.
