LUANDA, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- An attempted attack on the presidential palace in Equatorial Guinea has been foiled, reports from news agencies said on Tuesday.

A group of gunmen by boat landed on the beach of the third oil producing country in sub-Saharan Africa before launching the predawn attack.

The government has declared control of the situation after an exchange of fire with attackers, saying one of them was shot dead and several others got drowned when the Navy destroyed their boat.
