Hero coach driver Andrew Smith today thanked the medical staff
who saved his leg and enabled him to walk again following a horror
road smash.
Mr Smith, from Stoke, said he is lucky to be alive after his
Target Travel coach, carrying warzone-bound Plymouth-based Royal
Marines, careered off an ice-covered road and hit a tree at about
50mph near Cheltenham.
He was badly injured and faced having his left leg amputated
after it was horrendously crushed.
But staff at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital were able to save
his leg by slicing it open from the knee to the ankle - twice.
The two huge incisions released swelling and a second operation
was performed to close the wound again.
