Article: Officials speak out in defense of community golf courses

Seven years ago, Craig Swen usually had the Bon Air Golf Course in Moon pretty much to himself -- even at the height of summer.

This winter -- on rare days when the temperature has been above freezing and there is no snow on the ground -- Swen and his father were closely followed by other golfers at the course, renamed as the Moon Golf Club after the township bought it in 2003.

If popular notion says public ownership often means inefficiency, Swen says that's not the case in Moon, where the golf course breaks even and is run by trained professionals.
