Article: Pirates pick up manager Russell's option

BRADENTON, Fla. -- With more of an eye toward long-term stability than short-term results, the Pirates on Saturday picked up manager John Russell's contract option for 2010.

Although the team lost 95 games last year, general manager Neal Huntington said re-upping Russell was an easy call.

"J.R. met or exceeded all of our expectations in his first year," Huntington said. "He got the most out of our players, instilled discipline, worked on changing the culture, held our guys accountable.

"Just an outstanding job. Now we look forward to continuing to build upon it."

Russell is the Pirates' fourth manager since 1997. Pete Mackanin was interim manager for 26 games in 2005.
