Murdoch apologizes for New York Post chimp cartoon

NEW YORK, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Rupert Murdoch, chairman of the New York Post, on Tuesday personally apologized for an editorial cartoon published by the newspaper that drew charges of racism.

"We ran a cartoon that offended many people. Today I want to personally apologize to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted," Murdoch, also chairman and chief executive of News Corporation that owns New York Post, wrote in the apology posted on the newspaper's website.

Murdoch contended that the cartoon was meant to mock the stimulus bill and that, "It was not meant to be racist, but unfortunately, it was interpreted by many as such."
